Day Trips from San Jose: 7 Unforgettable Adventures

San Jose sometimes gets dismissed as just a layover city, but the truth is it sits in the middle of the Central Valley surrounded by some of Costa Rica's most dramatic landscapes. From KC Hotel, you can be standing on the rim of an active volcano, swimming under a waterfall, or picking coffee cherries straight off the branch — all before lunch. Here are seven day trips that consistently blow our guests away.

1. Poás Volcano National Park

Drive time from KC Hotel: 1 hour 15 minutes

Best time to go: Early morning (gates open at 7 AM)

What to bring: Warm layers, rain jacket, closed-toe shoes

Poás is the most accessible active volcano in Costa Rica, and standing on the rim looking down into the turquoise-green crater lake with sulfur steam drifting up is one of those moments you don't forget. The main crater is over a mile wide, and on clear days you can see both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts from the summit.

The park limits visitors to timed slots of 20 minutes at the crater viewpoint, so book your ticket online at the SINAC website beforehand — they sell out, especially on weekends and holidays. The drive up through cloud forest is beautiful on its own, winding through strawberry farms and coffee plantations.

Pro tip: Go as early as possible. By 10 AM, clouds typically roll in and obscure the crater. If you arrive at 7 AM, you'll likely get crystal-clear views. On the way back down, stop at one of the roadside strawberry stands — the fresas con crema (strawberries with cream) are absurdly good.

2. La Paz Waterfall Gardens

Drive time from KC Hotel: 1 hour 30 minutes

Best time to go: Morning to early afternoon

What to bring: Waterproof layer, comfortable walking shoes, camera

This is one of Costa Rica's best-organized nature attractions, and it's worth every dollar of the $50 USD entrance fee. A paved trail descends through cloud forest past five spectacular waterfalls, each more impressive than the last. The final one, La Paz, drops 37 meters into a misty gorge that feels prehistoric.

But the waterfalls are only part of it. The property includes a butterfly observatory (the largest in the world), a hummingbird garden with over 25 species buzzing around your head, a serpentarium, a frog exhibit, and a big cat sanctuary with jaguars and pumas. The included lunch buffet at the on-site restaurant is surprisingly good — don't skip it.

You can combine Poás Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens into one epic day trip. Hit Poás first at 7 AM, then drive 30 minutes to La Paz and spend the afternoon there. You'll be back at KC Hotel by 4 or 5 PM with enough time to decompress by the pool before dinner at Baraka.

3. Irazú Volcano

Drive time from KC Hotel: 1 hour 30 minutes

Best time to go: Very early morning (clearest skies before 9 AM)

What to bring: Warm jacket (it's cold up there), sunscreen, water

At 3,432 meters, Irazú is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica, and the landscape at the summit looks more like the moon than the tropics. The main crater holds an eerie green lake that shifts color depending on mineral activity and light conditions. On exceptionally clear days — and they do happen — you can see both oceans from the summit.

The drive up passes through the agricultural town of Cartago and the Tierra Blanca farming region, where you'll see fields of carrots, onions, and potatoes clinging to impossibly steep hillsides. The temperature drops noticeably as you climb. At the top, it can be close to freezing, even when San Jose is 25°C. Bring that jacket.

On the way back, stop in Cartago to visit the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, Costa Rica's most important religious site. The building is stunning, and the story of La Negrita (the small stone figure of the Virgin Mary found there in 1635) is fascinating regardless of your beliefs.

4. Orosi Valley

Drive time from KC Hotel: 1 hour

Best time to go: Any time, but mornings are freshest

What to bring: Swimsuit (for hot springs), camera, light layers

The Orosi Valley is one of those places that makes you understand why people fall in love with Costa Rica and never leave. It's a lush, green valley south of Cartago, ringed by mountains and dotted with coffee farms, small churches, and hot springs.

Start at the Mirador de Orosi for a panoramic view that'll have you reaching for your phone. Then wind down to the village of Orosi itself, home to one of the oldest churches in Costa Rica (built in 1743) and a small but charming colonial museum. From there, head to Balneario de Aguas Termales Orosi — natural hot springs with pools of varying temperatures where you can soak for a few dollars.

The drive around the valley is a loop, so you can take one road in and a different one back, passing through coffee farms and tiny villages the whole way. Stop at any roadside soda (local restaurant) for a casado lunch and you've had one of the most authentically Costa Rican days possible.

5. Sarchí Artisan Village

Drive time from KC Hotel: 1 hour

Best time to go: Morning to midday

What to bring: Cash for souvenirs, appetite for local food

Sarchí is Costa Rica's most famous artisan town, known for hand-painted oxcarts that have become a national symbol. The tradition goes back over a century, when coffee farmers decorated their carts with elaborate geometric designs. Today, you can watch artisans paint these designs by hand at workshops like the Fábrica de Carretas Eloy Alfaro, which has been operating since 1923.

Beyond the oxcarts, Sarchí is a great place to buy handmade wooden furniture, leather goods, and other crafts at prices well below what you'd pay in San Jose tourist shops. The central plaza has the world's largest oxcart (it's in the Guinness Book), which is wonderfully kitschy and makes for a fun photo.

Combine Sarchí with a visit to the nearby Grecia town, which has a striking red metal church imported from Belgium in the 1890s. The drive through the coffee-covered hills of the western Central Valley is gorgeous.

6. Coffee Plantation Tour — Doka Estate or Britt

Drive time from KC Hotel: 45 minutes to 1 hour

Best time to go: Morning tours offer the best light and energy

What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, curiosity

You can't come to Costa Rica's Central Valley — one of the world's premier coffee-growing regions — and not visit a coffee plantation. Two excellent options are within easy reach.

Doka Estate, on the slopes of Poás Volcano, is a working plantation that has been in the same family for three generations. The tour walks you through every stage: from the coffee cherry growing on the branch, to wet and dry processing, roasting, and finally cupping. You'll taste coffee at different roast levels and learn to distinguish flavor notes you never knew existed. The setting, with views over the valley, is spectacular. Tours run about $25 USD.

Café Britt in Heredia takes a more theatrical approach — their tour includes actors, humor, and high-energy presentations alongside the coffee education. It's polished and entertaining, great if you want something lighter. About $30 USD including tasting and a visit to their shop.

Either way, you'll never look at your morning cup the same way again. And yes, the coffee at Baraka back at KC Hotel is locally roasted — ask us about the origin.

7. White Water Rafting on the Pacuare River

Drive time from KC Hotel: 2 hours to the put-in point

Best time to go: June through October (highest water), but runs year-round

What to bring: Change of clothes, waterproof bag for phone, sense of adventure

This is the big one. The Pacuare River is consistently rated among the top five rafting rivers in the world, and once you're on it, you'll understand why. Class III and IV rapids carry you through a canyon of primary rainforest so pristine it feels like paddling through a nature documentary. Toucans fly overhead, waterfalls pour down the canyon walls, and the adrenaline is very real.

Most outfitters offer full-day trips that include hotel pickup from San Jose, breakfast, lunch on the riverbank, and all equipment. Expect to pay $90–$130 USD per person. The total time commitment is about 10–12 hours door to door, with 3–4 hours on the river. You don't need experience — guides are excellent and the safety briefing is thorough.

You'll come back exhausted, sunburned, and grinning. The heated pool at KC Hotel has never felt better than after a day on the Pacuare.
